We completed a feasibility study for Quinn Cement in 2015 to identify alternative fuels and alternative raw materials which might be suitable for use at their Ballyconnell cement production facility. The feasibility study investigated a broad range of materials in line with the following criteria:

• Fuel/Raw Material characteristics (e.g. solid/liquid, particle size, calorific value, moisture content, chemical composition etc.);
• Technical considerations (e.g. substitution rates/feeding requirements/emissions impact);
• Availability - location and quantities including potential suppliers;
• Commercial considerations

Based on the foregoing a number of suitable alternative fuels and alternative raw materials were identified. We are currently assisting Quinn Cement to design a project to accept these materials with the long term aim of displacing almost all fossil fuels at the plant (a limited proportion of fossil fuels will be required during process start up and for process optimisation/stabilisation). This project will further improve the sustainability of the facility.

Eco Tyre Tread Solutions, based in Belturbet, Co. Cavan, is a commercial Tyre Retreading company manufacturing environmentally-friendly retreaded tyres. Every tyre receives a visual and non-destructive inspection before entering the retreading process. Tyres with any major defects are rejected and are not retreaded. Retreading involves a number of different processes to produce a finished product fit for the road again. It is a straightforward, yet specialised process, which involves extending the life of a worn tyre simply by replacing the tread rubber.

ENERVISE have assisted Eco Tyre Tread Solutions with the regulatory approvals required to run the business. This includes preparation of the application to Cavan County Council for the Waste Facility Permit for the site, as well as applications to NIEA to register as a Carrier/Broker and to NWCPO for a Waste Collection Permit.

Irish Waste installed a Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) at their Carryduff site near Belfast for the treatment of Commercial & Industrial (C&I) waste. The aim of the facility was to produce Solid Recovered Fuel (SRF) of a consistent quality to meet the specification laid down in EN 15359.

ENERVISE carried out an investigation of the Carryduff MRF processing equipment. The incoming waste stream was also characterised. Initial samples of the SRF produced from the process were analysed for the key parameters indicated in EN 15359. Based on the results of the aforementioned studies ENERVISE suggested modifications to the Irish Waste treatment process, which after implementation, resulted in Irish Waste meeting the SRF specification required.
